Reading
September
In reading, we have been building the habits of strong readers. Good readers know that they are always thinking while reading, therefore we have been practicing stopping and recording our thoughts as well as discussing them with a partner. We will continue to build these habits throughout the year.
At home, you can encourage your reader by modeling a reading life. Do you read the paper every day? Find an article that you can read together! Are you in a Book Club? Talk about what kinds of things you need to do to be a part of it. Share a book with your child. Read to them (yes, even in fifth grade!).

Global Read Aloud
This year, our class will be participating in a project called the Global Read Aloud. This project will start October 2nd and will run for approximately 6 weeks. The idea behind it is very simple; teachers around the world read the same book aloud to their students and then use technology to share the reading experience with these other classrooms. It is a free project and it fits perfectly into the standards we have to cover.
During the project, our class will be reading Amal Unbound and connecting with students around the world who are reading the same book. We will use technology tools such as Google Hangout to facilitate these connections and conversations.
We are very excited to connect with others, especially since more than 400,000 students are already signed up to participate. This project will allow for our students to use technology tools in a meaningful way, as well as learn about other cultures, all while listening to a fantastic read aloud.
If you would like more information about the Global Read Aloud, feel free to visit the website, or I would be happy to answer any questions you may have. I look forward to starting this exciting project with your child, as well as seeing the connections we will make.

Writing
September
Writers have been gathering ideas for personal narratives, thinking about times in their lives that have been turning points, exciting moments, or share about someone or something they love. We have begun dipping in and out of the phases of writing: planning, drafting, revising, editing. Then we are doing it all over again! Students are seeing that writing is a process, not just a checklist of things to get done.
